‘Garcia’ now ranks among the top 10 among last names in America.
Bill, former executive director of the International House, is Puerto Rican and Betty is Dominican. They moved from their Latino neighborhoods in New York to Charlotte 15 years ago for more affordable living and escape the grind of big city life.
But now they worry they made a wrong decision. They fear by living in Charlotte their sons are not getting the same Latino experience they had growing up in New York.
The show starts at 9 p.m. Click here to see excerpts from the Garcia's interviews.

Thanks Franco for Excellent Information on Education for Minorities in Charlotte and North Carolina
ReplyDeleteI think that North Carolina is becoming a Big Area of Economic Development.
So educating these youngsters is a wonderful idea to produce accelerated economic growth in the Future.

One-fifth of all K-12 students and one-fourth of all kindergartners are Hispanic, according to U.S. Census Bureau tables released on March 2009
Note :
K-12 is a designation for the sum of primary and secondary education.
The expression is a shortening of Kindergarten (4-6-year-old) through 12th grade or grade 12 (16-23 years old), the first and last grades of free education in the United States

Hispanic Enrollment in Schools Rising, Census Bureau Reports
http://www.schoollibraryjournal.com/article/CA6642887.html?industryid=47062
Some excerpts :
Roughly one-fifth of all K-12 students—and one-fourth of all kindergartners—are Hispanic, according to U.S. Census Bureau tables released last week. And if the pace of minority children in this country keeps up, they will become the majority by 2023.
Western states such as California, Arizona, and Nevada are witnessing the most prominent rise in minority student enrollment, with the growing number of Hispanics due to immigration and higher birth rates, the Census Bureau reports.
Overall, the percentage of minority students—Hispanic, black, Asian-American, and others—have more than doubled over the last three decades to 40 percent in 2007.
And while the minority population is projected to become the majority by 2042, for minority kids, that shift is predicted to take place in 2023, seven years earlier than the previous estimate, from 2004, the Associated Press reports.

Here's a thought: If you want your kids to have a "Latino experience", MOVE TO A LATINO COUNTRY.
ReplyDeleteI did not have a German or Scots/Irish experience growing up in NYC. I had an AMERICAN experience.
You should be angry at your parents/grandparents for giving their backs to their ancestry and not giving you the opportunity to experience the German/Scot or Irish culture while growing up… i.e. language, culture, customs, traditions, etc. Remember… don’t forget where you came from.
ReplyDeleteHere's an idea...rent a U-haul, pack up your belongings and move back to New York if you are so concerned about the lack of a latino experience in Charlotte.
ReplyDeleteHey
ReplyDeletehere's a idea pack a u-haul of all those illegal Latinos that scream for equality when they are the ones breaking the rules. They should feel right at home in a sealed truck, maybe if we are lucky they will fall off a bridge.

What ever happened to the silly notion of living the AMERICAN EXPERIENCE, while living in America ?
I grew up with a "Latino experience."
ReplyDeleteI am 15th generation American on my mother's side (1597) and my father's people have been here since 1807. Both of my parents learned English as a second language because there have ALWAYS been Americans who speak Spanish.
I have five relatives buried at Arlington National Cemetery, and my mother had two first cousins buried in a national cemetery in the Philippines after being killed by Japanese troops in Bataan.
Unfortunately, part of the Latino experience in this country is dealing with people who don't know who they are or how they got that way.
Just because you don't know the history of this country does not mean you get to convince others when you pretend it means whatever you want.
I am sorry that your ancestors allowed their English overlords to make them ashamed of their heritage, but don't expect similar cowardice from me.
Those K-12 kids are mostly citizens. Their parents are illegal. We have to change citizenship law in this country. We are the only suckers worldwide who grant it just by place of birth. Also, God help any English-speaking kids in these classes. Almost all middle-class English speakers in California send their kids to private school, at great expense. They have to. Otherwise the kids won't learn anything because all the classes are geared toward non-English speakers, I lived in Los Angeles 20 years. I know this to be true. Thank God I didn't have kids.
ReplyDeleteRight on, 5:45 PM. Notice they didn't bemoan their kids not getting the same Latino experience they got in their HOME COUNTRY!!!
ReplyDeleteMy family line is Italian on both sides. I grew up in NYC in the 50's and 60's and I never experienced my Italian heritage once, and never wanted to. I was, and am, an American, born in the Bronx.
If I wanted Italian heritage I would have gone to Little Italy. I don't need to smell sausage and peppers cooking in my own neighborhood!
HEY PEREGRINO! DID YOU FORGET THE 2 MULES LINCOLN HONORED YOUR HEROIC FAMILY MEMBERS WITH AT GETTESBURG? YOU NEED A BIGGER SHOVEL!
ReplyDeleteCapitalists and Industrialists have to be intelligent - Minority Dolls - The smell of Gold and the Dollar - The Color of the Economy - Vespasian, Tito
ReplyDeleteCapitalists and Industrialists have to be intelligent every day, they can not abandon themselves to the foolishness of Racism and Hatred. Being a Rich Industrialist is like riding a bicycle, you have to pedal constantly.
Big Corporation Mattel has released a NEW black Barbie doll. She has fuller lips, curlier hair and other features that the company says more accurately represents African-American women.
"Dora, the Explorer" is a registered trademark of Big Corporations Nickelodeon and Viacom.
Now the sales of "Dora, the explorer" are skyrocketing in America and around the world. They are a superb Business.
I guess Dora has some universality and can represent other races. I say the same for the "Black" Barbie and for "Black" Obama.
There will be many customers for these "Minority" Barbies :
Black, Latina, Asian, Native American, etc ... or Latina Doll.
We see that the Economy works with many colors and complexions. With many textures, and appearances of the skin, especially that of the face.
Does the Economy have a color ??
Does the dollar have a color ?? .... that doesn't matter, its color can be changed.
When his son ( future Emperor ) Tito complained to Emperor Vespasian about the taxes for letrines in Rome ( bath rooms ) ..... Then Emperor Vespasian took a gold coin and said ??
Hey Tito, smell this - What is the odor of Gold ??
What is the smell of the Dollar ??

ReplyDeleteApparently I forgot nothing. My family has always been willing to serve this country, even if it makes it safe for cowards such as you who seems willing to spit on their sacrifice.
You richly deserve the contempt with which you fill your life.
Watched Latino in America last night, and the Charlotte family that feels a need to take the family to NY to connect with their roots is forcing something on the kids, who are American citizens and embrace the American culture. If the kids want to embrace the culture of their parents, that is their decision, not something the parents should force on them.
ReplyDeleteI think what this country is about is assimilation into the society we have available here in this country.
Appreciate one's culture at home, as we are a culturally-rich country. I am sure even Russian immigrants are getting tired of pressing 1 for English.
I have investigated my Scandinavian/Celtic roots for no other reason than I am interested, and not because it was stuffed down my throat.
They can get a Latino experience by driving a few blocks down South Blvd. if they miss it that much.
