Some see Mexican president's criticism of Arizona immigration law as hypocritical. The recent outcry stems, in part, from recent reports about Mexico's own policies against illegal immigration.
Several people pointed me to an interview Mexican President Felipe Calderon gave to CNN in which he acknowledges Mexico deports illegal immigrants from Guatemala and other Central American countries.
Calderon’s recent visit to United States received lots of attention this week because of his criticism of Arizona’s new immigration law and his call on U.S. legislators to pass a comprehensive reform bill.
Arizona's new law requires law enforcement to question people they reasonably suspect are here illegally.
In his interview with Calderon, CNN’s Wolf Blitzer asked the Mexican president about a recent Washington Times article that stated Mexico's immigration laws were tougher than those passed in Arizona.
Under the Mexican law, illegal immigration is a felony, punishable by up to two years in prison. Immigrants who are deported and attempt to re-enter can be imprisoned for 10 years. Visa violators can be sentenced to six-year terms. Mexicans who help illegal immigrants are considered criminals. - The Washington Times.Calderon acknowledged the law, but said it was changed a year ago. He said illegal immigration is no longer a crime in Mexico.
Blitzer then asked Calderon if an immigrant from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador or Nicaragua can just walk into Mexico without proper immigration paperwork and get a job?
“No, no,” Calderon responded. “If -- if somebody do that without permission, we send back -- we send back them.”
Calderon acknowledged arguments from residents in Arizona and Texas who only want to protect their borders like Mexico has been doing along its southern border.
Calderon called it a “powerful argument.”
“That is one of the reasons why we are trying to change our policy,” he said. “….In the past, Mexican authorities were in a -- in a -- in an unfortunate way in the treatment for immigrants. But now we are changing the policy. We changed already the law. And that is different today. We are trying to write a new story, talking about immigrants, especially coming from Central American countries.”
once a illegal always an illegal in my eyes. Goodnight thanks for trying to start something mexicprez. To bad you're an idiot.
ReplyDeleteBan all travel to mexico dont let them get any money from us. No tortillas or hot sauce either.
ReplyDeleteLike during the Great Depression, The USA needs to reimplement Operation WetBack and pack them up and send them south.
ReplyDeleteTime to play Cowboy's and Mexican's
ReplyDeleteThe truly amazing thing about all this is that people like Franco just don't get it. Let's recap, shall we?:
ReplyDelete1. Illegal aliens are CRIMINALS because they are breaking the law by being here without legal status. We PUNISH criminals in this country when they are apprehended by the police.
2. FEDERAL LAW makes it a crime for them to be here. This same Federal law is quoted chapter and verse in the recent Arizona legislation. (Not to mention, California penal code and the penal codes of many other states.) So if you're planning to boycott anyone, you need to go all the way.
3. The Mexicans themselves have TOUGHER laws than we do -- and they actually enforce them. For Calderon to come up here and criticize US for OUR law is like Hitler coming to your house and calling you a bad person.
4. Did I mention? The first word in "illegal immigrant" or "illegal alien" is ILLEGAL. What part of that do you not understand?
5. This is not a question of "human rights". No one is suggesting executing illegal aliens when they are identified, or torturing them. All we are asking is that the EXISTING laws be enforced and that they be sent back to wherever they came from, be it Mexico, China, England, Africa, or Russia. There is nothing in the Constitution of the United States that says it's OK for people to come here and flout our rules just because the place they came from is a sewer. There are RULES and LAWS and they must be followed and obeyed.
6. And yes, Calderon is a hypocrite. If you disagree, then you are an idiot -- he meets the textbook definition of hypocrite and this not a matter of opinion.
If I read into the Mexican law correctly, they promote a racist policy aimed at criminalizing those less fortunate.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the lecture and clarification.
Anyone who supports the illegal invasion of the United States is committing treason and should be punished accordingly. That is all, have a nice day.
ReplyDeleteThis is hilariously funny. BUSTED !!!
ReplyDeleteWhy did it only take the rigid tough anti-immigrant Mexican policy coming out in conservative media for months and months before the Mexican president finally admits it??????????
HYPOCRITE LIAR !!!
But when will Obama who will do anything to legalize them and get their vote say a word about their 10 times worse law than AZ ????????
Is Obama aware that Mexico has even gone as far as executed immigrants for decades??????
HIPPOS !!!!!!!!!!
If our IGNORANT, MARXIST SO CALLED president had once once of brains he would have insulted the Mexican SCUMBAG AND REMINDED HIM OF THEIR DRACONIAN IMMIGRATION LASWS PLUS KICKED HIS SORRY A--BACK TO FIFTH WORLD MEXICO!
ReplyDeleteArizona's new law requires law enforcement to question people they reasonably suspect are here illegally.
ReplyDeleteAh no genius.. The law states clearly that first the ILLEGAL must break an existing law, say the ILLEGAL'S favorite pass time, DUI and if after that point, they can't give you a valid drivers license and can't speaky no English, then they can be questioned regarding their citizenship.
No wonder you are part of the dying media.
In addition, the corrupt Mexico politicians by law can throw an ILLEGAL in jail for up to two years on first offense and then 10 years if you invade their country again.
Yet, all of the Dems gave this corrupt leader of this piss ant third world country a standing ovation and Bambam echoed his rants against Arizona.
Libs are losers.
I guess I'm having a really hard time understanding this. Mexicans say they can't afford to pay for the paperwork to be legally admitted to this country. And yet, they can round upwards to $3000 from family and friends to pay a coyote to bring them into this country illegally, then when they are caught and sent back, round up ANOTHER $3000 to come back again. Of course Calderon is protesting the policies. This is money that is being sent back to his country to be spent there. Also, because of the illegal drug trade, it's difficult to get other countries besides the USA to invest in business in his country. US corporations do it to keep from having to pay a living wage to the citizens of this country. Go figure!
ReplyDeleteInteresting that Mexico has only extradited one person, back in 2005, the to US for Murder, but regularly intercedes on the side of the defense in criminal cases involving Mexican nationals.
ReplyDeleteI say interesting considering they want to intercede in the defense of so many who are under our country's jurisdiction, but are still here illegally in the first place.
You would think Mexico would be demanding they be returned to serve trial in Mexico instead of having all that legal expense here in the United States. It is almost like they want their people to remain here illegally.
Something maybe we can get the Observer to investigate for us.
I don't have any energy around the Arizona law, but it is very clear the writer of the this column and the people posting comments don't understand the concerns voiced about the Arizona law.
ReplyDeleteBOYCOTT MEXICO AND ALL OF IT'S PRODUCTS!
ReplyDeleteMexico is officially
ReplyDeleteB U S T E D !!!!!
Calderon is blind to his own hypocrisy.
ReplyDeleteLet's try this - how about getting together a few hundred Tea Party-types at the Arizona-Mexico border, cross it illegally into Mexico, all show up at a Mexican hospital, and demand free treatment? How do you think that would fly?
If you can't pay for medical treatment in Mexico - guess what - you don't get it.
How about school for the children of illegals in Mexico - think they could get enrolled & have free public education, paid for by Mexican taxpayers?
How about Spanish as a Second Language - like ESL classes here in the U.S. - think children get those classes in Mexico? HA!
Mexico received over $21 Billion in LEGAL remittances last year. Mexico has a lot of very wealthy people, plus of course lots of poverty.
Mexican citizens need to clean up their own country, and stay out of ours, UNLESS it's by legal means.
That is, Mexico received those remittances from the U.S.
ReplyDeleteAnd we've sent them something like $1.3 BILLION in aid for their drug war last year.
PLUS what Calderon said about illegal weapons coming into Mexico from the U.S. is not true - only about 18% of weapons now come from the U.S.
They're becoming a de facto colony of the U.S. - but we're receiving the rotten consequences - like Phoenix being #2 in the world for kidnappings.
BTW, anyone (like on the loony Left) who buys & smokes marijuana from Mexico has blood on his/her hands. You are subsidizing a culture of violence, torture, and death if you do.

Looks like an avalance in progress
Damn that GW Bush ...
I am all for sending back EVERY illegal alien, nOT just Mexicans either. I have to laugh though, when other commenters scream about "marxist" Obama and damning HIM for not doing something about immigration. Where were they during the EIGHT years of the last bush disaster and the FOUR years of his fathers disaster? NEITHER of them did ANYTHING to slow the flood of illegals across the southern border. The ONLY thing reagan did was give the illegals amnesty!!! In other words the RIGHTWINGNUTJOBS have done NOTHING to discourage illegal immigrants in TWENTY of government control. THAT makes republicans just as big in the hypocrisy department as Calderon. DEPORT EVERY SINGLE ILLEGAL ALIEN IN THE USA~!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteHey 6:54, how do you think the last amnesty bill was defeated? Yes it was the same people that are all over this now that were on it then. It was during the Bush years, as well, and McCain was a cosponsor. While I'm at it, the first modern Tea Party was in Boston back in 2007. I'll leave you with this: Yes Obama is a Marxist Revolutionary that intends to take America down a few notches, and if you support him you are either really uneducated, a completely dishonest person, or you are also a Marxist Revolutionary. There can be no other explanation, the evidence is clear.
ReplyDeleteFYI: I lived in a South American country under many years of a Marxist military leader, I know exactly what it looks like and the language they use. Obama is almost exactly from the same mold. You will wake up one day and realize that you have been used as a "Useful Idiot".
Recapping from yesterday's post:
ReplyDeleteWell, there you have it folks...
After getting home from a long week of helping many US citizens cope with losing the only jobs they've ever had, which were low income jobs at that, all I wanted to see was hope that we, the people who grew up in this country, are willing to help our own.
Instead, I see that the people of this nation are still bickering about Immigration, and about who should be setting what laws.
I will gladly invite the hundreds of US citizens that I counsel and console to get on stage at a stadium while ALL of you people who think that illegal immigration doesn't hurt US citizens APOLOGIZE for the jobs that OUR OWN people have lost to illegal immigrants.
I had to try to tell these people that there is some ray of sunshine in this country... a country that many of them fought for... a country of people who have completely turned its backs on their OWN citizens!
And, before you try to criticize my statement in this blog, BE AWARE OF THIS:
OVER 250 of the people that I am writing about have lost their low-wage jobs to illegal immigrants. Many of these immigrants have been arrested in employment raids on the same companies that employed US citizens to do the same jobs only 6 months ago... which is the same time frame that these so called undocumented laborers were hired at these companies.
When you are ready to offer these US citizens their jobs back, THEN you are ready to critisize Arizona's new law, and any other immigration law.
Until then, all of you people who are fighting against illegal immigration laws owe our own citizens your apologies!
This is a sign of the times to be sure. There is no longer a United States of America, because its own citizens have turned against eachother.
Consider that!

ReplyDeleteI sure hope North Carolina is one of the 17!!!! IF NOT it NEEDS TO BE!
Anonymous 5:14,
ReplyDeleteWhat I find very interesting is that I haven't heard of one person bashing the Arizona law that admits to having actually READ IT.
The law specifically states that racial profiling is not permitted, yet that is the most often used claim presented by those who oppose it.
The point of the article, and of many of the posts, is that it's always amazing how those who are always trying to tell the US how things should be done, so rarely do them that way themselves!
Mexico is criticizing us for cracking down on illegal immigration, even though our "crack down" looks more like amnesty when compared with Mexico's own laws!
If you aren't getting that point, then maybe you aren't paying attention.
Franco: Thanks for this article. It is refreshing to see balanced coverage on the immigration issue and somebody writing about Calderon's shameless hypocrisy.
ReplyDeleteLet's be honest, Calderon's only concern is to make sure Mexico keeps receiving the billions it gets from Mexicans living in the U.S. And yes, most of them are here illegally.
Would Calderon care about his fellow Mexicans if they were not the main source of revenue for their country? He wouldn't give a rat's rear end!
It is pathetic to see this "President" come to the U.S. with his arrogant attitude, criticize American laws and try to distract the attention of the public by bringing in topics that have nothing to do with immigration as he did while addressing Congress. shame on you Calderón!
The reason no one outside of America cares about its laws is that the American government doesn't care about its laws.
ReplyDeleteobama goes as far as apologizing for them and for America itself.
maybe obama should move to mexico and fundamentally transform that place and leave America alone.

ReplyDeleteI wonder if we could pay Mexico to take Mr. Obama and his criminal czars and advisors and maybe a lot of our NC state house staff with that package. Our "no balls" state government is asleep at the switch as usual.
ReplyDeleteLotta anonymous internet tough guys talkin crazy stuff in here.
ReplyDeleteCalderon is a hypocrite, but the marxist indoctrination conspiracy theories are pretty comical.
Hey Leonard and Kickazz 2000, you keep on drinkin that kool aid! Enjoy the intentional destruction of your country at the hands of radical Marxist Revolutionaries. FYI: There is PLENTY of evidence to support that the Obama administration is full of Marxist Revolutionaries, you have just been watching way too much MSNBC to be able to tell the difference. FYI, I am plenty tough enough, don't need clever screen names like yours to back me up. I will be seeing your type in the future, I am sure in your "grassroots" protests.
ReplyDeleteHey Kickazz2000, how are the Cards gonna do this year?
ReplyDeletelol, alarmist much?
ReplyDeleteMr. Ordonez,
ReplyDeleteYou didn't KNOW this until TODAY? And you're supposed to be an EXPERT on immigration?!?!
If you have any honor at all you'll quit tomorrow.
11:32, isn't that funny, talk radio has been covering this since the interview happened. No wonder the disturber is failing.
ReplyDeletePRES. CALDERON! YOU ARE A MORON! I
ReplyDeleteCAN'T BELEIVE HOW STUPID YOU ARE.
YOU SIR, ARE JUST LIKE THE ILLEGALS
YOUR COUNTRY SENDS HERE. YOU, LIKE THE ILLEGALS DON'T RESPECT THE
SOVEREIGNTY OR LAWS OF OUR NATION.
GO THE HELL BACK TO FABULOUS MEXICO AND TAKE THAT LOW-LIFE IN THE WHITE HOUSE WITH YOU, HE AIN'T NO BETTER!
Can we adopt the immigration law in North Carolina? If you want the system to support you, you have to pay into the system, and therefore must be a legal resident.
ReplyDeletePRES. CALDERON IS A MORON. HE ADMITS MEXICO DOESN'T TOLERATE "ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION", IN
ReplyDeleteHIS OWN WORDS HE STATED "WE SEND THEM BACK". WE HAVE A WEAK PREIDENT
AND THE WORLD KNOWS IT.OBAMA ISN'T RESPECTED, OTHERWISE THESE FOREIGN
LEADERS WOULDN'T HAVE THE BALLS TO
ADDRESS A FULL CONGRESS AND SCOLD
THEM FOR NOT BENDING OUR LAWS TO SUIT THEIR INTEREST. PRES. CALDERON
HASN'T REALLY FACED THE WRATH OF THEAMERICAN PEOPLE. IT'S COMING!
Remember the marxist in the white house appointed ex-governor Janet Napalitano head of "Homeland security". That misfit was a lousy governor taht did absolutely nil
ReplyDeleteabout "illegal immigration" , she went way out of her way to sabotage sheriff Joe when he tried to enforce immigration law. Now, she states she would have never signed that bill if she was still governor. She's just what the marxist wanted, someone that is totally useless, and very pro-illegal immigration. On top of all her short-comings she admitted never reading the federal immigration law adoted by Arizona. She just wouldn't sign it. Head of homeland security, "never read the bill"? I bet the marxist didn't either! DUMB AND DUMMER!
Most here are ignorant hypocrites who say they would never cross some invisible line to better them self's or provide for their family then turn around and complain bc you can't afford the next big thing on the market. Human nature is to better themselves and provide for their family and if you wouldn't do that than your genes need to be eliminated from the gene pool bc you are sub human. Here is an analogy you build a huge water park next to the ghetto and put NO fence around it just hang a sign that says no trespassing, if a kid goes in and breaks something or drowns by law who is responsible? (If you don’t know it is the owner of the water park for not securing it), Now the USA tells the world we are the best country and then leave our boarders wide open? Who’s fault is it when people come to be in the best country?
