SC town seeks to stop illegal immigrants from moving in
A town near Charleston is considering a proposal that would prevent illegal immigrants from living in the community.
Summerville town councilors are expected to consider an ordinance today that would prevent illegal immigrants from living in the town of 45,000 people and in most cases keep them from working here, according to The Post and Courier.
Councilman Walter Bailey says the idea was prompted in part by the Obama administration's challenge of the new Arizona immigration law.
A federal judge has blocked key aspects of that Arizona law, but Bailey says his Summerville ordinance is different enough to where he doesn't think the judge's ruling applies.
This country to do something to stop the illegals.
ReplyDeletegood for Summerville
ReplyDeleteHere's how it will go, and I guess it's my big problem with the whole issue. Lower income LEGAL alien (or possibly even US Citizen of foreign ancestry) has trouble securing a lease or mortgage, then after finally moving in gets repeatedly hassled by "good citizens" making sure the ordinance is enforced. THEN you have a middle class or higher income ILLEGAL who may speak fluent English and "fit in" better with the local gentry who will never be questioned. I have no problem with anyone who is justifiably stopped by law enforcement or arrested having their immigration status checked. If you're breaking the law, you need to be deported. However, routinely stopping people to check status by local law enforcement is inviting a constitutional disaster. Someone of European ancestry may be a terrorist, but I can guarantee you they wouldn't be profiled/stopped as quickly as a US Citizen of hispanic ancestry.
ReplyDeleteThis is great news for SC, I hope it works for them!
ReplyDeleteGood for Summerville! If they do this I'm more likely to visit and spend my money there!
ReplyDeleteI DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHATS THE PROBLEM WITH THE ILIEGAL IMMIGRANTS EVERY NEWS PAPER HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THIS SUBJECT.THESE PEOPLE BEEN IN THE COUNTRY FOR EVER AND NOW EVERYTHING HAS TO DO WITH ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS.THE ECONOMY ITS SO BAD BECAUSE OF OUR POLITICS, BANKERS, WALLSTREET, HOME APPRAISERS,ALL THESE PEOPLE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR OUR ECONOMY. WHEN EVETHING WAS WELL WHEN THE ECONOMY WAS BOOMING ALL THESE ILLEGALS WERE HERE. SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT THEY THINK. I KNOW THEY ARE ILLEGAL HERE BUT ITS THAT OUR REAL PROBLEM.I DONT THINK SO.
ReplyDeleteAWESOME! More power to this town! I think it's GREAT! (note: ILLEGAL ALIENS not welcomed....)
ReplyDeleteImmigrants with PROPER visa's... come on in!
The headline itself seems crazy. The whole country should be seeking to stop "illegal" immigrants from moving in.
ReplyDeleteThese folks should see how well this worked for Prince William County, VA, Hazelton, PA, and Fremont, NE.
ReplyDeletePrince William County's economy tanked long before the general collapse of August, 2008--about the same time they were releasing the same undocumented DWI suspect who was recently involved in a fatal accident with a nun. The county commissioners put all of their resources in this "get tough" housing effort and forgot to get tough where it mattered. But the "tough guys" won elections, and that really was all that mattered.
In Hazelton and Fremont the ordinances (drafted by Kris Kobach of the Immigration Reform Law Institute) cost millions of dollars to defend, and turned out to be unenforcable. Hazelton's law was set aside by the court after racking up $2.4 million in legal costs, and the Fremont law is expected to cost $1 million a year--although it may be much higher when we counting the law suits.
Kris Kobach learned his lesson. He made sure his law firm could skim some of that money when he went on to write SB 1070 for Arizona. In fact, SB 1070 allows him to sue if the local police prioritize enforcement of ANY crime over enforcement of immigration law.
I would be interested to see who stands to reap some of the financial booty from this latest proposal.

ReplyDeletePeople want to live in South Carolina by choice?
ReplyDeleteWell said Whitson, I could add nothing to this fine penmanship. As for all of the other comments, please read the constitution carefully. Better yet-study it. Things like illegal search and seizure. Funny reading all this stuff from immigrants and family of immigrant types.
ReplyDeleteit's just funny that they have to come up with a proposal that will eventually turn into a town law or ordinance to prevent something that shouldn't be happening in the first place.
ReplyDelete"...and in most cases keep them from working here..."
ReplyDeleteSo, basically, Summerville is...abiding by the law?
Good luck with that. Something tells me you aren't going to find many Whites of European ancestry doing manual labor outdoors during the Summer down there in semi-tropical South Carolina.

Get used to it because when we do finally secure the border and any illegals who remain and become US citizens, their pay and benefits will most likely increase, thus causing higher prices.
Hooray for Summerville !! I keep seeing comments, reading articles about the 'unconstitutionality' of the AZ law, or other states trying to enact similar enforcements. How does OUR CONSTITUTION affect any rights of people who are here ILLEGALLY??? Wake up, people !! (or you'll see a continued decline of anything resembling the American we know and love.. and may even wake up one day on a reservation, wondering what happened... )
ReplyDeleteHey Franco, still waiting on your expose' on the illegal alien child rapist.
ReplyDeleteTHIS JUST IN!
ReplyDeleteFlorida AG McCollum, Lawmakers Unveil Immigration Bill Modeled After Arizona's
Published August 11, 2010
Florida Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill McCollum gestures as he speaks during a forum sponsored by the Christian Family Coalition, Saturday, Aug. 7, 2010 in Miami.
Florida's attorney general and a group of state lawmakers moved Wednesday to push the Sunshine State into the forefront of the national illegal immigration debate with a bill modeled after Arizona's controversial law -- only, they claim, with a better shot of withstanding a court challenge.
State Attorney General Bill McCollum, following the lead of Virginia's top prosecutor, also issued an opinion saying state law enforcement already have the right to ask about immigration status in the course of their duties.
"This legislation will provide new enforcement tools for protecting our citizens and will help our state fight the ongoing problems created by illegal immigration," McCollum, a Republican, said in a written statement. "Florida will not be a sanctuary state for illegal aliens."
Way to go Florida!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Instead of running around changing the 14th amendment and chasing illegals out of the country, the GOP needs to restrict the number of H1B visas issued to Indians and Asians. These visas are killing American jobs.
ReplyDeleteWiley,
ReplyDeleteMcCollum is down 29-41 in the Republican primary. He is grandstanding. You don't actually think he could survive a general election in Florida with that stance, do you? What he is doing is ensuring that Florida is a Blue state in 2012.
Does anyone have any estimates around how many illegal aliens are in the US. I've seen some figures as high as 20 million, which is getting close to 10% of the population. If the #s truly are that high, I think we should be using the term 'invasion' to describe the problem, instead of 'illegal aliens'. To make matters worse, the largest group of illegals refuse to assimilate (learn and speak English). By ignoring this problem, yes you earn a cheap slave class to do manual labor, but you also lose your country in the process.
ReplyDeleteSummerville = WIN! Good job!

ReplyDeleteWhat is your problem with LEGAL immigrants? Get over yourself. This discussion is about ILLEGAL immigrants. Please go play outside while the grownups talk
Strange, this was a very short story.
ReplyDeleteNormally these Illegal Immigration stories get a lot of flesh on the bones of the story.
I wonder why the lack of enthusiasm?
Way to go Summerville!! THIS should be the law of the land in EVERY city and state. If they are here legally then welcome. Illegals should get the hell out.

ReplyDelete-Kind of like the Original "Americans"??? Funny, I don't remember the first immigrants from Europe filling out any paperwork when they landed on Plymouth Rock...

I could care less whether this guy wins or loses.
My agreement is with what he is putting forth.
typical teabagger/GOP strategy: Pick a scapegoat (preferably one of color) and blame all our problems on them. How many lawsuits will it take before you ignorant cracker morons get the hint: "IMMIGRATION laws are federal jurisdiction. PERIOD."
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Anom 12:25 on 1 point: The illegal immigrants have been here for awhile. While all the economic woes cannot be blamed on them alot of the economic woes can be. Our schools are having a hard time paying for teachers but they have to have interpreters in the classrooms for the non English speaking students.
ReplyDeleteHealthcare for citizens of this great land has gone beyond the roof because providers have to charge extra to pay for illegals who do not have insurance to cover their medical bills.
Our unemployment rate continues to rise. A big part of this is due to corporate bigwigs who would rather send our jobs overseas but another big problem is the illegals. I could afford to work for much less money too if I did not have to pay taxes.
These are just a few examples. I just think it is time our country looks after our own for awhile before we don't have a country to look after.
If Americans would not rent or sell to illegals they would not come here and the ones who are here will leave. No new laws are needed. Citizens need to value something other than the almighty dollar

This from 2007:
BOSTON - States legislatures passed more than twice as many bills dealing with illegal immigrants this year as they did in 2006, enacting laws on everything from employment rules to human trafficking, according to a study released today (Aug. 6).
Pressure from voters and frustration with Congress' inability to pass comprehensive immigration reform pushed 41 states to enact at least 170 laws this year, compared to 84 laws in 2006, according to an updated survey from the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL).
The US Supreme Court ruled 9 to 0 in 2005 that police had the right to ask a person's residency status while in custody for another charge. The case was Muehler v. Mena.
I didn't catch whether or not you considered yourself to be a cracker.
Hey gringo its ok, Remember who does all the jobs noone else will do and cheap?
ReplyDeleteSummerville will turn all ugly with uncut tall 3' grass and weeds, chipped paint on all the homes business and churches plus the roofs will leak and the roads will be full of ruts and holes with noone to fix them.
