Obama halts deportations to Haiti

In response to the tragic earthquake in Haiti, the Obama administration announced that it is halting deportations back to the devastated country.

Advocates are also calling on the federal government to grant Haitian nationals living in the United States Temporary Protected Status, which is given to nationals of countries the government deems unsafe for return.

``TPS is in the range of considerations we consider in a disaster, but our focus remains on saving lives,'' Matthew Chandler, deputy Homeland Security press secretary, said in an e-mail to El Nuevo Herald after the department announced it was halting deportations.
