Advocacy groups respond to Latino KKK allegations

Carolina advocate Andrea Bazán says she was stunned to hear conservatives compare the largest Hispanic advocacy group to the Ku Klux Klan.

Our colleagues at the (Raleigh) News & Observer report that the nomination of a Hispanic woman to the Supreme Court has brought allegations few thought possible. Some conservatives say Sonia Sotomayor's former membership with the National Council of La Raza should disqualify her for the high court.

La Raza is a Washington-based private non-profit. Its mission is to reduce poverty and discrimination and improve the opportunities for Hispanic Americans. It also aggressively supports immigration reform that includes a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants and advocated for illegal immigrants to pay in-state college tuition fees.

Former Congressman Tom Tancredo called La Raza "a Latino KKK without the hoods and nooses." And conservative political commentator Rush Limbaugh compared Sotomayor to David Duke, who is a member of the Ku Klux Klan.

“It’s outrageous,” Bazán, who chair La Raza’s board, told the paper.

Much of the focus has been on the group’s name: La Raza, which can mean “the race”
Ron Woodard, who leads enforcement advocacy group N.C. Listen, said "They seem to play the race game and to be focused on their race because of their name."

State Sen. Phil Berger, an Eden Republican, who is sponsoring a bill that would bar illegal immigrants from community colleges, said he’s troubled by La Raza’s advocacy work for illegal immigrants.

"If she's a member of the group and she agrees with their policy positions, that would argue against her being on the Supreme Court," he said.

But others say these allegations against La Raza and Sotomayor are a subversive political strategy, much like was used against African American organizations during the civil rights movement.

Said Bazán: "I think we should be looking at the Sotomayor nomination and discussing her qualifications as a judge."

Well, this group is pushing hard to reward illegal aliens

much like the popular latino phrase, "Viva la Raza" = "long live Mexicans"

Why is reverse discrimination not any worse than just plain discrimination?

"others say..." "Few thought possible..." "Can mean...."

Gosh Mr. Taco-hugger - got any more prevarications behind that sh~t-eating grin of yours?

Oh look - what a surprise - more pro-illegal stuff on the front page of Charlotte.com. What a shock - it is almost like they have an agenda or something...

Shocked.

How insulting to compare this crap to the civil rights era. Seriously?! What next, the holocaust? Let me remind you the civil rights fight was about AMERICAN CITIZENS demanding equal treatment and protection under the law. It was not about non-citizens demanding preferential treatment while breaking the law. Franco, I thought you a fool before but you really are farther out in lala land than even I thought.

I guess the only difference is that real KKK doesn't coerce banks into giving them money (e.g. Wachovia gave $20MM)

Viva Laz Raza= "Long live the indian". Get your facts straight.

Of course the bigots will attack organizations like this - we're dealing with the same people who attacked the "uppity" Martin Luther King and Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

Now they have moved on from opening attacking African Americans to openly attacking gays and Latinos. Bigots will be bigots, but I think they have turned up the venom because they are angry - they are angry that their ilk has become the one thing they hate the most - a minority!

Wow 5:47. You're clearly missing it (as is ordonez). People who are not citizens and tax payers here do not have the right to make demands on the rest of us. This has nothing to do with "attacking gays and latinos". It is about a group that is hell bent on telling the US it has no say in who comes here, how they come here, or what they do when they get here. Your argument and the author's are like comparing apples to ....roller skates. Get a clue.

Anonymous said...

5:47 P.M. I guess you had to throw that gay stuff in, huh? Homosexuals are being attacked, they are for the most part doing the attacking. But there will come a time when they will face the most serious attack on homosexual sex that has ever been know to man. Judgement! God's judgement, not mine! As for illegal immigrats, that's not the same as legal ones, I will always be against that and will not relax until they have to get in line and come into this country the way our present laws say they have to.

We have laws in this nation for a reason. Everyone should obey them, including illegal immigrants. Go home and come into the country the right way! If you feel that the southwest was taken from you and you want it back saddle up the Mexican army and do the right thing, fight for it militarily or forget it.

Well said, Anon. 5:47.

I doubt that any posters here, or most Americans generally, can PROVE that THEIR families arrived in this country legally. (Hint: I can't.) And we certainly can't say that Mr. Columbus or the Mayflower, Pinta and Santa Maria arrived "legally."

Bigots are bigots, and they will go to any length...even hijacking their religion... to justify their bigotry to each other.

Anon. 6:06, Good for you that YOU have THE ONE TRUE interpretation of the Bible (I've never heard that one before, LoL), but some of us don't see it that way and don't care to live in the Christian Taliban state that you'd so like to model after Iran.

Really? Have you been sleeping since the Clarence Thomas hearings? Every nomination by a Republican president is tarred as a vile, bigoted, black-lynching 1930's Klan throwback.

The truth is that Sotomayor really does believe her race and childhood give her the ability to make better decisions than an old white guy. The least she could do is have the courage of her convictions and defend her belief.

Anyone know of any "White Advocacy Group". Just wondering. Or about a step further a "White Southern Male Advocacy Group"

These folks are heading real close to bringing on a situation they better be prepared for.

David Duke is not in the Klan; he was once in the Klan, but not now. Just pointing out a factual error.

Anon 6:11, read what you have post to this article and think about what you are saying. Are you seriously comparing current illegal aliens to our settlers? Remember, you can't break a law that doesn't exist. You hurt your cause with ignorant statements like that.

Anon 6:16, good point. It's funny how liberals and media pass off racist statements and criticism of AA or Hispanic Republicans. Look at the statements made against Powell, Rice, Thomas, Estrada, etc. Even Biden said the only reason Thomas is a Supreme Court justice is b/c he's black.

For all Americans wanting an open debate of Sotomayor’s nomination, remember, you are only allowed to discuss certain experiences that have been approved by the Obama Administration. Anything unapproved will be considered a racist attack.

We are sick of your crap anti American propaganda and embolding foreign aliens who have flooded us with cost and crimes unimaginable. Your ILLEGALS have RUINED NC and many other states!

Its good to know the bloggers has time to delete comments he disagrees with, yet has never once answered any of the questions put forth to him.

In all reality, this is not a blog but another opinion article, like all the news the Observer prints. Mr Ordonez, to be a true blogger, its a two wat street, you have to engage your readers, that would mean actually answering a question every once in a while. Especially now that we know you do read the comments.

So how about it, where do you stand on these issues?

And my personal question: Do you get paid by the comment, if so you must be getting half the wages the Observer pays!

The KKK is the advocacy group for Southern White Males. Why don't you check them out if you are so inclined. The backwood, redneck mentality of people in thei community gets downright disgusting sometimes. I hope Sotomayor rub her judgments in your face once she is confirmed.

One can challenge their existence of La Raza as racist in nature due to it's exclusive ethnocentric agenda, but comparing La Raza to KKK is ridiculous. Simply because La Raza has never engaged in or openly condoned the tactics of tehe KK. i.e. torture, lynchings, & cross burnings.
That said, they receive criticism and they for good reason. I went to their website "about us" page and the president of La Raza stated that they have a controversial name that some "misconstrue" as meaning "the Race". She also acknowledged that they are a relatively young organization. Considering those two facts, they could have easily changed the name to a less controversial name, but they haven't... Oddly the definitions they site from trusted sources indicate the term is about nationality, ethnicity, and race.
I noticed that the website is inconsistent, sometimes refering to Latino & other times refering to Hispanic. This is particularly depending what criticism they are addressing.
The thing that caught my attention is where they addressed criticim over only helping hispanic (Latinos?). They claimed they serve areas of cities where latino people are concentrated. They claim they serve all of the people in these impoverished communities, regardless of race and that they do not discriminate. So my question is why do they claim the are trying to help hispanic/latino people in one breath and "everyone" in the next? That is bull. Their website is very clear they want to advance the position of Hispanic & Latino people in the U.S.
The fact is they are focused on only helping hispanic/Latino people exclusively. In some ways that is acceptable, but there will always be critics and rightly so. Most of those critics would be skewered in the media as racist, socially bannished, and legally destroyed if they tried to organize a group that focused on helping only "white" people. And La raza would surely be the first one to beat that drum.
These ethnically/racially/nationally exclusive organizations deserve to be criticized and wathdogs must make sure they never cross the line from advocacy for challenged people, to exclusivity & racist agendas. Afterall we don't need another KKK. SO I say if you want to help poor people of only one race/ethnicity/nationallity, shut up and take your medicine

"To all you white bigots out there:
In about a generation or so, your descendents are going to come and urinate on your graves because you and your ancestors were not kinder to minorities"
- "white bigots"? I gues one bigot is worse than another because of their race. judging from your comments your descendents will be doing the same to your grave. FYI hispanic people are commonly "white". Duh...

For those who call people opposed to La Raza bigots and racists, I would suggest you do a little reading and research into what this group has been up to out west. La Raza is like the KKK, like the Black Panthers all race based hate groups promoting one race over another. La Raza wants a Mexican agenda pushed into place out west, they feel the sale of the American Southwest was wrong and want it back plain and simple. This judges association alone should disqualify her from the bench.

MS-13 and Sur-13 gangs may be sponsored by LA RAZA ; I have read this on many internet sights but they claim Our last President may have been a member of LA RAZA and many presidents of South America may be members . I only know that If someone comes here to live I want their credentials checked out and I hope they want to pay taxes up to par with the rest of us americans . Many Hispanics americans are fighting in IRAQ and AFGANISTAN and lets not undermind them . We have an obligation to protect Peoples freedom and I believe we should take over MEXICO as the 52 state and free those People of tyranny.

Mexicans have been coming here for one hundred years and maybe more. They are hard woking People and should be paid at a good standard. I wish they would just take over Mexico 50 miles at a time and culture its safety with U.S. soldiers. CIVIL WAR is starting in Mexico and they need our military help right now. Lets face it Ulysses Grant even goes on record saying that" The Texas, California and New Mexico and Arizona territories were all the Mexicans land that he drove off" But the Mexican Government back then was paid 15 million for the land they were drove off. Back then that equates to 1 billion dollars. It appears that many Mexicans are being pushed out of their own Country . I do believe with the SOCIAL SECURITY GHOST accounts of 550 Billion , we could puchase land back in Mexco and expand the U.S. and make safe cities behind all the Southwest States. Just fifty miles back and drop a fence.

LA RAZA may have ties to hate the GRINGO groups that is starting up here. Like Most hate groups they all go undetected for years until they get so big the Governmnet goes after them. If any of you have lived in CALIFORNIA you will see Spanish are the Majority group and descendant culture. They dont really want top be flooded with extra hundreds of thousands of People they have no jobs for. We have a real problem at hand everywhere in this Country. Jobs are getting shipped to INDIA , CHINA and all over and Mounds of People are coming here. I see furure civil wars in the U.S.

If a civil war does break out all insurance is void for CARS and HOUSE damage. Yes, There is a clause that states in all insurance that insurance is not responsible for civil war as a result of Terrorism and civil disobedience wars. So hope like hell your not in the thick of things when the civil war breaks out. Just ask your insurance company and have them put it in writing. They wont pay for nothing.

Doesnt anyone thin k its strange that the U.S. Goverment should have asked African Americans to work jobs before they invited all of Mexico here and try to make the BLACK man a little richer by offering no taxes for five years to african americans for reperations. A little tax help goes a long way and makes a person a little richer so they may get ahead
Signed WHITE MAN FOR REPERATIONS for BLACKS civil rights and slavery violations

That would be a perfect compromise for the nearly-4-centuries of bigotry, racism, and injustice done to both blacks and Native Americans, because these groups were the most disenfranchised in the history of our country! I would say no taxes for 2 years, instead of 5...we don't want to "bankrupt" our state governments, would we? Thanks for that wonderful idea!

Well at this point they are here and just make them tax paying citizens , its to expensive to send them back. The Social Security has ghost accounts from illeagals that worked here for years maybe the Government should buy 50 miles back into MEXICO and try to send troops to settle the land and create a new city 50 miles back. Maybe a Us MIlitary base or something for the good of man.

Mexicans are getting tortured in Mexico in many civilized area and could be al qeuda is setting up camp back there. Maybe we should take Mexico over 50 miles at a time and build new cities back there. We could all retire better down there anyway.

I do believe in open immagration but we must keep in mind the MIDDLE EAST wars that are getting worse. We must keep NATIONAL SECURITY in mind so we dont get attacked like 9-11 again; We muxt quarintine People make sure they have a relative to vouch for them and a JOB this is important . People who came here like my relatives had to learn english enough to get by . Lets face it most Mexicans are not here to do us harm but we have to be cautious that al-queda doesnt get anymore People in the U.S. One more disaster spells MARSHALL LAW , loss of rights and maybe detainment camps like WW II ; We really dont want that here in the U.S.
